I persevered... and I succeeded!
YESSSSSS!!!
I found the code that was causing the problems!
If you insert a background, border, etc into your blog entry using HTML code, even though you place a < table > tag at the beginning of your entry, do NOT close off the entry with the < /TABLE > tag... just leave it open.
I now know why so many computer software engineers are bald! And I can relate to what keeps them going...
There is something to be said for that feeling of success after hours/days/weeks of frustration trying to solve the craziest of problems!

I think it all has to do with the formatting of the next table or blog entry (and if the next entry doesn't have MY html background code in it, then I'd better leave the table tag open or else everything will get all screwed up). It also doesn't make sense that in order for our own html source code to work, we *open* a blog entry with <pre></table></table>... but that's the crazy world of msn spaces...! When my blogs were all messed up, my codes all worked in the code testing thing at http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/ producing tables that looked just like they were meant to (as long as I took out the "close table" tags at the beginning!), but in the blog module here, anything could happen when I hit that "publish" button! But you're right -- leaving off the closing tag would normally be completely wrong!

Of course there could be a 'hidden' </table> somewhere in msoft's *hidden* blog trailer...

Well, you know that can't be the right solution. There must be an error somewhere else. Try opening your html file in iexplore and see if it says "error on page" in the bottom left corner. I expect it will say that.
